Kerry rowed at university before embarking on her ultrarunning journey with a gentle introduction: the Marathon des Sables. She completed the MDS soon after having her fourth child, an impressive feat in itself as any parent will attest.

She developed quickly and is now one to watch on the startline of any ultra. She's won multi-day races and frequently places in the Top 3 of the UK’s biggest events. Having run in exotic – yet also dangerous – locations like the Amazon, Himalayas and Sahara amongst others, she has more experience than many. She's also a highly experienced coach and owns Perpetual Motion Coaching.

In this conversation, we enjoy hearing about Kerry’s exploits and explore the role that fear plays in endurance events. Particularly pertinent was her recent epic at The Spine Race – a 276-mile non-stop ultra in winter along the length of the Pennine Way – where mountain rescue had to be called to extract her from a fairly sticky situation.

Show snippets – on the importance of visualising positive outcomes

What you say to yourself – the little visions, the goals, the dreams and aspirations – they may seem ethereal and elusive, but actually the things I’ve held in my mind as dreams are the ones that became reality. Not consciously, but subconsciously I must have been working towards putting those in place.

So, having these dreams is so important because it does definitely lead you towards them even if you’re not conscious of doing so

On using the Amore Energy Bar during her Spine Race epic, Kerry said: “Tastes great and I love that it’s not synthetic – it feels like I’m eating feel food. Careful though – once you grab one you’ll want another”
