Running into a faster future with Kieran Alger

Running into a faster future with Kieran Alger

Running journalist Kieran Alger is this week’s guest on the 33Fuel podcast. Kieran has, for the last 10 years, tested every piece of running gear under the sun. Whether it’s the latest pair of super-shoes, wearable tech, apparel, nutrition product or new data gathering device, he’s put it through its paces. So he’s in a very good position to share what will shape the next few years of running…

Alongside his own extensive personal running experience - 40+ marathons and plenty of ultras – Kieran has become one of the UK’s top running gear testers.

In this conversation, we take a gaze into a crystal ball and discuss what products and trends are going to help (or hinder) runners’ performance in the future. We also talk about the pros and cons of an organised event vs your own self-organised challenges.

If you want to get ahead of the curve and hear insights about what's going to be boosting your running performance in years to come, you'll love this interview!

Kieran Alger show notes – on the future of running trends

“There’s a big move towards people getting involved in mass-participation events and racing regularly. I actually think more people will move towards their own personal adventure and setting their own challenges. There’s been a big uptick in FKT’s over the last few years. Really, it’s about the enjoyment of running and not so much about hitting a certain time.

Another area of tracking our training. I get a sense that while we’ll still look at key data we’ll start to look beyond the data and get a nice balance between getting into the numbers when it matters, but not getting overly obsessed with them.

These two trends are very linked.

On the flip side, one of the things I’m fascinated about it real time blood glucose monitoring. Essentially, this technology allows you to monitor your blood glucose levels in real time and a couple of companies have taken this on and put it into the running sphere. You wear a skin monitor which links to your phone and provides a real time insight into your blood sugar levels.”
