Listen to Susannah Gill on the 33Fuel Podcast

The 7x7x7 World Marathon Challenge is a truly remarkable event - entrants must complete seven marathons in seven days on seven continents. Made famous by Sir Ranulph Fiennes in 2003, the physical and mental demands - let alone the logistical complexities – make this a truly unique challenge.

An experienced marathon runner, Suze averaged a blistering 3:28:09 for her seven marathons. Although this is quite a bit slower than her 2:56 marathon PB, when you consider the lack of sleep, disrupted nutrition and huge climatic variations from one day to the next (from snow to desert), you begin to realise what a rather remarkable feat it was - certainly well-deserving of the world record.

Suze has documented her training and experience of the World Marathon Challenge in her recently released book Running Around The World. We definitely recommend adding this one to the reading list, and in the meantime we hope you enjoy this conversation.

33Fuel podcast show snippets – how Susannah reached the decision to enter the World Marathon Challange

“I spent about 6 months at the beginning of 2018 thinking about whether I should do it [the World Marathon Challenge] or not. 49% of me was saying ‘This is the most ridiculous thing ever, you’re an ordinary marathon runner, you shouldn’t be taking on something like this’.

I mean, I used to be so lame the day after a marathon. Yes, I could run an ok marathon but getting out of bed the next morning was pretty painful, so I couldn’t comprehend how I’d run seven in a week. But then 51% of me said ‘Look, if you don’t have a go and do this you’re going to wake up when you’re 70 years old and regret that you didn’t give it a go.

That’s probably the greatest thing I’ve learnt: that if there’s even just a little bit of you that wants to take on a challenge, you should definitely do it, because actually we regret the things we don’t do.

That’s how I finally came to sign up for the World Marathon Challenge!
